Being in the timeshare cancellation business, we hear from a lot of timeshare owners who want to get out of their timeshare. Unfortunately, a lot of these customers tell us that they feel like they made a mistake buying a timeshare. While feeling like you make a big mistake can be uncomfortable and unfortunate, we’re going to dive into the different ways that mistakes can actually be one of the best teachers. Because let’s face it, we’ve all made mistakes – big and small. It’s not about not making mistakes. It’s about learning from it and what you do with the experience you’ve gained.

1. Mistakes Help You Grow

It can be so easy to be hard on yourself when you make a mistake, but the truth is that mistakes are how we grow. In fact, studies show our brains actually grow when we make mistakes. Crazy, right? Our muscles work the same way. When we lift weights, our muscles experience something called microtears. In response, our body sends blood and nutrition to the area, which is how our muscles grow. Challenges and struggles – or in other words, mistakes – are how we grow.

Don’t take our word for it. Albert Einstein once said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” Or as Henry Ford said, “The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.”

There’s a reason we know not to touch a hot stove. It’s because we know what it feels like to be burned. Mistakes are just another word for experience. If you need some inspiration, Entrepreneur has a list of six stories of wildly successful people who overcame failure. Examples include the failed company Bill Gates had before Microsoft and how Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper and told that he wasn’t creative. Don’t let a mistake define you. Mistakes are how we refine.

To sum it up, whenever we feel that we are good at something, it’s usually because we’ve made a lot of mistakes first. Part of knowing where to go is knowing where not to go. The way we learn anything new is by making mistakes. We learn to walk by falling down and getting back up again. We learn to make basketball shots by missing a whole lot of shots first. We learn to sing by signing a bunch of off-key notes at first. That’s how it works. Mistakes make us better.

2. Mistakes Can Make Us Stronger

We don’t get diamonds without pressure. It takes high heat to turn sand into glass. Small seedlings need wind to grow stronger stems. Struggle transforms us and can make us stronger. With mistakes come experience, knowledge, and insight.

With mistakes can also come empathy, which is another form of strength. It takes great strength and experience to understand the emotions of others. When we make mistakes and learn what it feels like to struggle, we can then put ourselves in the shoes of other people. This can often lead us to speak more kindly and be less reactive. Think about a doctor who has a poor bedside manner. Can you recall a friend who has said something really insensitive to you? Would you feel like they were stronger and wiser if your doctor or your friend had a kinder and more patient demeanor? That’s the power of empathy. Mistakes can soften us in that way and make us more compassionate.

3. Mistakes Can Point You in New Directions

While mistakes may feel like a waste of time, they can often lead you down new roads that are actually blessings in disguise. For example, penicillin was discovered by accident after “failed” experiments, the inkjet printer was discovered when an engineer accidentally put an iron against a pen, and chocolate chip cookies were discovered while trying to make plain chocolate cookies. Sometimes we don’t get our intended results, but in the end, our mistake leads us to something even better. If you’re looking to hear more ways that mistakes turned into amazing discoveries, check out this article from Business Insider. The fact of the matter is – success is built on top of failure.

Summary

Feeling like you made a mistake can bring up a lot of different emotions, everything from anger and sadness to embarrassment and shame. It can be important to remember though that everyone makes mistakes. No one is perfect. So many inventions and discoveries were found by making a mistake. So many successful people “failed” before they had any hint of success. Anyone who excels at anything got there by making mistakes. Mistakes teach us. They help us grow, make us stronger, and shape us to be more compassionate.
